“Coded Objects” Artistic Archival Residency with the Ambiguous Standards Institute (ASI)
Organized by Anna-Maria Meister and the Lise Meitner Group “Coded Objects” in collaboration with the saai | Archive for Architecture and Engineering, KIT Karlsruhe and the KHI Historical Archive
The Ambiguous Standards Institute has conducted its Artistic Archival Residency throughout June and July in Germany and Italy to design a new artwork: Ambiguous Standards of the Archive: The Taxonomy of Unknown. ASI worked in saai, the southwestern archive for architecture and engineering in Karlsruhe and Kunsthistorisches Institut Historical Archive in Florenz and in collaboration with the Lise Meitner Group coded objects and KIT Karlsruhe.
The archive knows, a lot. But the unknown co-exists in the archive alongside the known, under ambiguous standards, sometimes categorised through negative categories, cryptic denotations, and is subject to the same possibilities of becoming more known or remaining unknown.
The unknown is ambiguous, depending on how it is unknown; whether through missingness, unresolved identity, or suspended systematisation. The unknown comes in various forms, with spectral qualities, existing within or surrounding an archive and with varying degrees of unknowability.
The Ambiguous Standards of the Archive looks at the taxonomy of the unknown, using the archival containers as vessels of unknownledge, the knowledge of the unknown.
